"It is magnificent to stand on the banks of the Danube," wrote the Roman philosopher, statesman, and author Pliny the Younger (63–113) back in the 1st century. He was likely captivated by its beauty in the Đerdap Gorge.
But it's even more beautiful to cruise on the Danube.
Take the opportunity to explore the Đerdap Gorge from the water. From Donji Milanovac, you have the chance to navigate through the narrowest part of the Danube and enter the "Mali and Veliki Kazan" Gorge, which is a true treasure trove of beauty and history.
The Romans made the narrowest part of the gorge navigable to continue their conquests in the east. At the end of the gorge, they erected the famous Trajan's Bridge, which remained the world's largest bridge for thousand years. Today, the unique witness of that time is the Trajan's Plaque, a monument that can only be seen from the Danube.
Before the construction of the Đerdap I Hydroelectric Power Plant, the Danube waters were navigated by the famous ‘locevi’ captains. Their job was to wait for ships at Đerdap and safely guide them through the gorge. Navigation through the narrowest part of the gorge was organized by so called ‘balloon stations’, the river semaphore of that time. Today, they serve only as reminders of that era, as modern technology has replaced these traditional navigation methods.
Today you can enjoy a leisurely and safe boat ride through the most beautiful part of Djerdap on boats, catamarans and small boats that carry tourists during the season. Don’t miss the greatest attraction in Djerdap and set sail through the largest gorge in Europe.
